After devastating floods wreaked havoc in Calgary and communities across southern Alberta in June 2013, Tervita used its expertise in large-scale project management and integrated waste disposal services to help get the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth back in the saddle.
Tervita was quick to reach out to the Calgary Stampede after water from the Elbow River flooded Stampede Park two weeks before the annual Calgary Stampede, a 10-day showcase of western heritage that attracts hundreds of thousands of local and international visitors each year.
Despite widespread damage to the grounds, including the Grandstand, where the Stampede’s premier rodeo and entertainment events take place, officials vowed the July 5-14 Stampede would go on as planned “come hell or high water.”
A proud sponsor of the Calgary Stampede and the general contractor to clean up the grounds, Tervita worked to ensure that the 2013 Stampede was a go.
Tervita mobilized more than 500 employees and 300 pieces of specialized equipment from across Western Canada to assist with flood relief efforts.
Crew members were called in from B.C., Manitoba and as far as Ontario to assist their Calgary colleagues. Together, they put in more than 46,000 hours to get the grounds in shape for opening day.
Ben Pongracz, a site supervisor from Burlington, Ontario was at his supervisor’s birthday party when he heard about the flooding. He got on a plane and was in Calgary the same day.
“We care about everyone at Tervita and the people of Calgary, so I just wanted to do what I can to help out during the crisis,” said Pongracz. “I’m so impressed with the way Tervita has been able to respond to this and how quickly and collaboratively the team has come together.”
As an integrated environmental services company, Tervita can quickly mobilize equipment and crews where they are needed, even under pressing circumstances such as the recent floods. The company has a dedicated business unit specializing in water treatment services along with a team of waste management professionals.
As the Calgary Stampede opened its doors, Tervita managed clean-up projects in a number of structures on the 200-acre Stampede Park, with a focus on site and building damage assessment, cleaning, demolition, disinfecting and final inspections to make sure the area is safe for Stampede guests, employees and volunteers.

- Tervita had more than 500 workers at various locations on Stampede grounds, working a cumulative 46,000 hours;
- There were 12 large dehydration units and more than 100 industrial fans used to dry out affected areas;
- Nearly 200 other pieces of construction equipment and vehicles were also deployed to the grounds;
- More than 450,000 kg of demolition waste, debris and sludge was removed by Tervita crews, equivalent to 200 mid-sized cars;
- At the same time, Tervita responded to emergency train derailments in the region.
