Steam Generator Decommissioning

When it's out with the old and in with the new  – Tervita's full suite of cost effective integrated solutions deliver proven value. 

Our client enlisted Tervita to remove, dismantle and recycle six heat recovery steam generators. The project called for a partner that could provide an integrated solutions approach - from project outset through to completion. From transportation and dismantle, to responsibly dealing with NORM’s (naturally occurring radioactive material), through to recovering value from metals recycling, Tervita provided a fully scalable solution offering to manage the entire scope of the project.

Our Customer's Challenge

The dismantling, transport and recycling of six extremely large heat recovery steam generators. Each unit measured approximately 17 x 8 x 2.5 meters (56 x 26 x 8 feet), each weighed more than 145,000 kilograms (320,000 pounds). While all six units were above ground, NORM had contaminated portions of the piping (metal tubing) as well as the soil around the steam generator units.

Tervita's Solution

TRANSPORTATION & DISMANTLING

Tervita moved the units to one of our nearby waste processing facilities which provided a large enough outdoor space for our metals recycling experts to safely dismantle the steam generators with large equipment sheers.

DECONTAMINATION

After decontamination by ultra-high-pressure blasting, we sent the treated materials to our Metals Recycling team for processing. We also removed and disposed of all NORM-affected soil from the project site. 

RECYCLING

From the six steam generators, Tervita recycled 854.3 metric tonnes (nearly two million pounds) of metal that would otherwise have ended up in a landfill.

SEGREGATION

We segregated the dismantled units to isolate all the NORM-affected materials, which we then sent to Tervita’s specialized NORM’s team. All non-contaminated metal went directly to our Metals Recycling team.
